Fire Prevention - Housing - Property Maintenance

This division consists of one Supervisor, one Fire Official/Fire Sub-Code Official, two Fire Inspectors, two Housing Inspectors (one assists the DPW with inspections), and one accounting clerk. All of these employees are civilian personnel.

They are responsible for all fire, housing, and property maintenance inspections within the city. Other duties include review of plans for new construction and/or renovations, fire lane violations, inspection of properties requesting certificates of rental occupancy, handling of daily complaints, court appearances, and year round public education programs.

All of our inspectors are licensed in their respective fields, while three hold certification in both fire and housing disciplines. These licenses do require mandatory state certified refresher training on an annual basis.

This division has developed and implemented a plan that is based on educating owners and tenants as to the violations existing at their properties while cooperatively attempting to achieve compliance. This plan has allowed our inspectors to complete their duties while adapting to the diversified needs of our residents and property owners.

Some of the special projects completed by the Division during 1999 included; a detailed property status report on 383 Nordhoff Place, a fire and property maintenance violation sweep of the southern industrial section of the city, a sidewalk repair study/violation report of the Third Ward, and the participation in various citywide Housing/Property Maintenance Task Force projects.

The recent improvement in the effectiveness of the Fire Prevention/Housing/Property Maintenance division is a testament to the personnel who are assigned to the office. These knowledgeable and dedicated employees are the foundation of the city’ current revitalization efforts. Their daily contributions will insure that the City of Englewood remains a safe, clean, and secure community in which to live and visit.
