City of Englewood, Bergen County, New Jersey

Wayfinding Signage System
(The following is extracted from the RFP for the Wayfinding System)

INTRODUCTION
The City of Englewood, a city of 26,000 residents within 5 square miles, is in the final phase of a successful revitalization effort that began in 1995. The Central Business District has evolved into a major restaurant and shopping hub for the surrounding northern valley communities. Over four hundred million dollars of new construction is either underway or approved and currently a major mixed-use development project is being completed downtown. Efforts are continuing to make the central business district pedestrian friendly and a parking garage has recently been built to accommodate the increase in parking demand. A local shuttle/trolley service is being planned for the City, encouraging residents from outlying neighborhoods to utilize public transportation. Parking and traffic will continue to occupy the attention of the City and this project includes design and installation of a pedestrian and vehicular wayfinding system throughout the core of the city.

PROJECT GOALS
The City of Englewood seeks to build upon its current downtown successes by maintaining or increasing utilization of the area restaurants, shops, and its live cultural institution, the BergenPac. The central business district has grown geographically somewhat and to sustain the enormous investment in the downtown, continued patronage is important. It is also necessary to help direct visitors to downtown from Englewood’s major arteries as well as ease their wayfinding within the downtown core. It is the intent of the wayfinding signage program to enhance the success and market potential for arts, entertainment, historical, and economic growth. The system should anticipate the continued evolution of Downtown, including traffic pattern changes, the addition of new destinations, and increased pedestrian traffic.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Englewood seeks to develop a comprehensive signage system that facilitates wayfinding throughout the City and the Downtown, while enhancing the sense of direction and evoking imagery. This wayfinding signage system should address the needs of visitors and locals using all modes of transportation.

Street level vitality, legibility, safety, maintenance and replacement costs are all major concerns in creating an informational signage and wayfinding system that is both direct and friendly. The program should consider a variety of sign types including, but not limited to:

• General directional information and wayfinding, pedestrian and vehicular
• Attractions signage
• District branding
• Interpretive signage for historic areas
• Memorial and historical venue
• Entertainment venue
• Hospital
• Public parking
• Maps for kiosks and websites
• Significant Municipal/Public Buildings
• Highway directions
• Future projects
• City Hall Message Board sign
